Namesake
Two significant events led to the making of this project: my birth, and the death of my grandmother.
In addition to our shared bloodline, with my birth, we also shared a name. It was one I was never happy to hold or to divulge, due to its outdated nature. My outlook changed with the passing of my grandmother.
The last picture I ever took of her - where she is only partially visible - was the driving force for my need to capture more of her, albeit in absentia.
Thus, Namesake is an investigation into the person I was named after and a quest to understand her life. By exploring her surroundings and belongings, and by drawing parallels between our lives, I try to understand the eponym of my name.
This project won the Byblos Bank Award for Photography 2018
